چکیده

The combination of Mobile IP with frequent handovers results in high handoff latencies and control overhead in the core network. Micromobility protocols like Cellular IP, Hawaii and MIPv4 Regional Registration were developed to avoid these problems, supporting local mobility within one IP domain. This paper proposes the MEHROM (Micromobility support with Efficient Handoff and Route Optimization Mechanisms) handoff scheme, which consists of two phases. During the first phase, an efficient handoff is performed, aiming to reduce the handoff latency and packet loss. The second phase guarantees the set up of an optimal path between the current access router and the domain gateway. During handoff, a router in the access network detects whether it has the function of cross-over node and whether the second phase must be executed. In contrast to other micromobility protocols, no assumptions about the access network topology are made, control traffic is concentrated near the involved access routers, while low packet loss and optimal paths are achieved.

Comparison of IP micromobility protocols

We present a performance comparison of a number of key micro-mobility protocols that have been discussed in the IETF Mobile IP Working Group over the past several years. IP micro-mobility protocols complement Mobile IP by offering fast and seamless handoff control in limited geographical areas and IP paging in support of scalability and power conservation. We show that despite the apparent diff...

A cross-layer partner-based fast handoff mechanism for IEEE 802.11 wireless networks

In wireless/mobile networks, users freely and frequently change their access points while they are communicating with other users. To support the mobility of mobile nodes, Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) is used to inform the information of mobile node’s home address and current care-of-address (CoA) to its home agent. MIPv6 suffers from a long delay latency and high packet losses because MIPv6 does not su...

Route Optimization Mechanisms for Internet Applications in Mobile Networks: A Survey

The use of mobile networks is rapidly increasing day by day. There are two aspects in mobile networks such as host mobility and network mobility. The protocols used for host mobility takes care of only single node to be connected with the internet. But, the protocols used for network mobility takes care of whole network to be connected with the internet using mobile router. The need for NEtwork...

COSC 6590A High Speed Computer Networks Project Report Route Optimization & Handoff Mechanisms in Mobile IP by

Mobile IP (MIP) is the current standard for IP-based mobility management, capable of providing wireless Internet access to mobile users. An important feature of Mobile IP is its ability to support the changing point of attachment of the mobile node by a mechanism known as handoff. A handoff is needed to maintain connectivity to the Internet as devices move among networks, while at the same time...

Improving TCP handoff performance in Mobile IP based networks

Mobile IP has been designed to support host mobility over the Internet. In this paper, we show that in most cases the smooth handoff by the route optimization of the Mobile IP standard cannot prevent degradation of TCP performance in events of handoffs, although it was originally intended to reduce the number of packets dropped during a handoff. We also show that in utilizing the route optimiza...
